MAGPI - Main Annulus Gas Path Interactions

MAGPI is an Specific Targeted Project co-funded by the European Commission within the Sixth Framework Programme.

The MAGPI programme investigates the interaction between the hot, main annulus gas path and the internal air system flows of gas turbine engines. Subtle changes in hot gas ingestion have a significant effect on the life of the highly stressed turbine discs. The Sussex team has instrumented a high speed (10,630 rpm) two stage turbine test rig with engine-representative cavity geometry and cooling flows (shown left). Significant instrumentation development has allowed the resolution of small surface temperature gradients of the order of a few tenths of a Kelvin which is a significant improvement on the few facilities capable of such conditions.
