Aerospace & Aerothermal Engineering - Research

As well as aeronautical research projects within the Department, a number of successful industry/university partnerships have been developed. These include:

SAMIA

A collaboration set up between Marshall Aerospace (which is based in Cambridge) and the Department of Engineering.

The objective of the Sir Arthur Marshall Institute for Aeronautics (SAMIA) is to support teaching and research in Aeronautics within the Department; in particular, the objective is to link and present the Department's traditional strengths in aerodynamics, aeroengines, structures, materials, electronics and design in a coherent interdisciplinary manner focused on Aeronautical Engineering.

University Technology Partnership (UTP)

Links with the aerospace industry have been strengthened considerably through the establishment of the BAE SYSTEMS/Rolls-Royce University Technology Partnership (UTP) for Design in September 1998. The academic partners in this venture are the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre (EDC), the Institute of Work Psychology at the University of Sheffield and the Computational Engineering and Design Centre at the University of Southampton. The academic partners have undertaken a successful programme of research on behalf of the industrial partners, with the Cambridge contribution focused on Engineering Knowledge Management. The results produced are already influencing the working practices in the two companies.

The University Gas Turbine Partnership (UGTP)

A major new gas turbine research centre based in Cambridge, known as the University Gas Turbine Partnership (UGTP) extends a relationship with Rolls-Royce which has placed a succession of key technology acquisition programmes with the University for nearly 30 years. Rolls-Royce has supported turbomachinery research in the University since the Whittle Laboratory was opened in 1972. The new UGTP includes the Whittle Laboratory, but is broader in scope, including additional activities in other parts of the Department.
