The Department and its Facilities - Language Unit
The Department has a recently refurbished Language Unit, incorporating a 15 terminal audio-visual room and a library area. The Language Unit offers students multi-media, on-site facilities. The languages are taught using a variety of media including: DVDs, audio tapes; CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) software, some of which has been specially made for Engineering students; and CKS (Cambridge Kent Southampton) multi-media material on CDROMs which is aimed at scientists, especially engineers, and has been devised by a consortium of universities led by the Cambridge University Language Centre (to which all students have access). Additionally foreign language films are shown during term and overseas trips are offered to enhance comprehension in an enjoyable way. Each year a competition called World Cabaret is held to allow students to demonstrate their language skills.
