Alumni News: Dr Michael Tompsett: 14 November 2011
My name is Dr Michael Tompsett.
I did my Ph.D in the Engineering Dept from 1962-66.

My recent news is that I was just awarded a US National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on engineers and inventors,

For pioneering work in materials and electronic technologies including the design and development of the first charge-coupled device (CCD) imagers.

The materials work for which I was cited had its origins in the Engineering Dept. The Medal was presented in a ceremony at the White House in Washington, DC by US President Obama on October 21,2011.
This was a lifetime award for 6 achievements in different areas that are still in use today. (See the details in http://www.uspto.gov/about/nmti/recipients/tompsett)

Tompsett and Obama

I had previously been awarded the Pioneering Life-time award by the NJ Inventors Hall of Fame in 2010.
I should also mention that the thermal imaging camera tube that I invented while working in England, received the Queen's Award in 1987.
