Cambridge Engineering Achievements

On this page we hope to have information on the achievements of past members of the department as well as news on current work being done.

Professor Sir Charles Oatley (1904 - 1996) started the research in 1948 that led directly to the launch in 1965 of the world's first series production scanning electron microscope - the Stereoscan - by the Cambridge Instrument Company. This pioneering work is described in our History of the Scanning Electron Microscope

Sir Frank Whittle (1907 - 1996) is perhaps our best known ex-student. In 1936 he received his B.A. with first class honours in the Mechanical Sciences Tripos. He continued with post-graduate work here until 1937. Our Whittle Exhibition covers aspects of the life and work of this pioneer of jet propulsion.
