Self observation
One of the simplest methods of assessment is for the designer
to emulate using the product.
Self observation is the default method of assessment for many designers. They use the product themselves to find the difficulties that users might encounter. However, even a designer with exceptional empathy for the end-users will not assess a product accurately unless a suitably rigorous structure is in place. Such a framework should consist of defining the likely tasks for using the product and then breaking the tasks down into component steps and analysing each of those steps.

The basic actions required to make a cup of tea:
- Take lid off kettle
- Carry kettle to tap
- Turn on tap
- Fill kettle with appropriate amount of water
- Turn off tap
- Carry filled kettle back to power supply
- Replace lid of kettle
- Turn on heat source
- Wait for water to boil
- Take lid off tea caddy
- Take tea bag from caddy and place in cup
- Lift kettle filled with just boiled water
- Pour water into tea cup
- Wait for an appropriate brewing time
- Lift tea bag out of cup
- Throw tea bag away
