Systems Software Development Manager

The role holder manages and takes the lead role in software development activities covering all aspects of software systems (primarily web-based) to support the Department’s administration, teaching and research. The role holder manages the full development cycle for software projects, from feasibility and value for money appraisal, requirements gathering and user interface design through planning and implementation to training, delivery and in-service maintenance.

The role holder must be a senior and experienced computer professional capable of providing technical and project management and interaction with project sponsors, as well as hands-on technical work and development of a highly complex nature. The role holder is also part of the Planning Group comprising the senior technical experts of the IT Services Division, and supervises less experienced staff when they are involved in specific development projects.

The role holder must be capable of producing web based front ends to software systems, and must keep abreast of new developments to ensure that the Department has modern, secure and effective solutions to its requirements. The role holder must also be capable of taking software systems written by others and either enhancing or maintaining them. Many of the systems on which the role holder works provide access to databases and, on these, the role holder works closely with the Department's Information Systems Manager.
