Whittle Lab IT Manager

The role holder provides support for all aspects of computer use to members of the Lab. The role holder coordinates computer purchase, configuration and installation; manages network-mediated facilities provided within the Lab and maintains links to those facilities provided by the Engineering Department and the Computing Service.

Computers are essential in three distinct aspects of the work undertaken in the Lab: as research tools in performing numerical calculations of fluid flow; as research tools for collecting and analysing data from experiments; as office tools for communicating and preparing papers and presentations.

Because the Lab is physically distant from the Engineering Department many of the facilities provided centrally – such as printing and backup - have to be duplicated locally. For the same reason the role holder is the first point of contact for any computer related problem. The role holder reports to a member of the academic staff with designated responsibility for computing for day-to-day line management; and to the Divisional IT manager for divisional policy and technical guidance.
