Dr David Payne 1933-2018

The Department announces with deep sadness the death of Dr David Payne.

Dr Payne died in January, less than a week before his 85th birthday. He was born in Liverpool, attended Holt Grammar School and did his National Service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (1951-3) before coming up to Gonville & Caius College.

He earned a First in both parts of the Mechanical Sciences Tripos and graduated in 1956 to a position at Bristol Aircraft (Filton). From there, he moved in 1958 to the Nuclear Power Division of The English Electric Company Ltd. From 1960, he was a Demonstrator and Lecturer for the University of Cambridge, coming to King’s College as a Fellow in 1963 where he was, for a time, Director of Studies for Engineering.

Dr Payne will be missed by all who knew him, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
