Alumnus Felix Newman has won a British Education Award in honour of outstanding sporting and academic excellence achieved during his Cambridge Master of Engineering degree (MEng).

Felix has demonstrated sporting excellence at the highest level, while at the same time never letting his academic work take second place. What Felix has achieved is an excellent example of the value of British education.

Professor Daping Chu

Felix won the England Zone 2 Degree category at the 2018 British Education Awards (BEA). He was nominated for the award by Professor Daping Chu, his former Director of Studies at Selwyn College.

Felix achieved a First in every year of his studies and a Distinction in his final year. At the same time, he balanced academic commitments with rigorous sporting demands as a member of Cambridge University Boat Club – a role that included rowing for the winning team in the 162nd Cambridge-Oxford Boat Race in 2016.

Felix is now pursuing a prestigious postgraduate Advanced Master Aeronautical Engineering Programme in Toulouse.

Professor Chu said: “I’m really pleased that our Engineering graduate Felix Newman was announced a winner of the British Education Awards. Felix has demonstrated sporting excellence at the highest level, while at the same time never letting his academic work take second place. What Felix has achieved is an excellent example of the value of British education.”

The BEA recognises the outstanding academic and extra-curricular achievements of students – and is the only event in the UK that celebrates individual success on a national platform. The Awards have been established to promote excellence in British education and inspire the pursuit of learning.
