Dr Matthew Juniper has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship to the Institute for Advanced Study at the Technische Universität München in Germany. He will join the Focus Group on Advanced Stability Analysis, which applies recent developments in Applied Maths to industrial problems in Fluid Mechanics and Thermoacoustics.

These techniques evaluate the optimal initial state to achieve or avoid a particular outcome. For example, they can calculate the disturbance that is most effective at triggering turbulence on an aircraft wing or the vibration that is most likely to trigger instability in a rocket engine.

The Institute for Advanced Study at the Technische Universität München is the centerpiece of the university's institutional strategy. The strategy aims to promote top-level research in the Excellence Initiative by the German federal and state governments.

The Visiting Fellowship scheme funds academics with an excellent international reputation to engage in short-term but intensive collaboration with researchers at the Institute.
