Professor Matthew Juniper has been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society.

Throughout his career, Professor Juniper has made a great many fundamental contributions to hydrodynamic and thermoacoustic stability problems, providing new insights into a range of important engineering systems.

Ann R. Karagozian Distinguished Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles

The APS Fellowship Program was created in 1921 for those in the physics community to recognise peers who have contributed to advances in physics through original research, innovative applications, teaching, and leadership. According to the APS, each year no more than one-half of 1 percent of the APS membership, excluding student members, is recognised by their peers for election to the status of fellow.

Matthew's research is in the broad area of Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics. Recent applications in his group include Magnetic Resonance Velocimetry, gas turbine engines, cyclonic vacuum cleaners, and inkjet printers. He uses physics-based statistical learning to develop quantitatively accurate physics-based models of an application and then uses adjoint-based optimisation to improve their designs. For example, these methods improve the speed and accuracy of Magnetic Resonance Velocimetry by a factor of 100.

"Throughout his career, Professor Juniper has made a great many fundamental contributions to hydrodynamic and thermoacoustic stability problems, providing new insights into a range of important engineering systems.  He is a rare scholar who combines mathematical and experimental rigor to enable
solution of practical problems, and is very much deserving of this special recognition from the American Physical Society." Ann R. Karagozian PhD Distinguished Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles.
