Suitable for: 14+ Dr Tom Hynes describes the physics of why aircraft are noisy before discussing the results of the recent Silent Aircraft Initiative – a collaborative effort between Cambridge University, MIT and others – showing, with the aid of demonstrations, how novel aircraft of the future could be a great deal quieter.
17 March from 10:00am - 4:00pm, University Centre, Mill Lane.
Suitable for ages 6-12 although the whole family can join in. This is the third in a series of 6 'Discover Engineering' family workshops. They aim to Introduce young people (7-12) to the fun and excitement of engineering and technology. The key to their success are the enthusiastic teams of student volunteers, who help to make engineering more accessible and to provide role models for the next generation of engineers.
The format of the workshop is quite simple the families design and make their crane which is then tested to destruction! The student volunteers act as 'engineering consultants' to advise the teams on their design. The event is free to all participants. Drop in any time between 10am - 4pm and allow approximately one hour for construction. For further information please visit the outreach website

Suitable for: All ages. Join Cambridge Engineers to launch and track a 'Nova balloon'. Watch as a high altitude helium balloon is launched and help track its course. It could fly to over three times the height of Everest before descending by parachute while taking photographs.
