Full Blue Racing (the Formula Student team) have just returned from the UK competition, held at Silverstone race circuit. The team joined 92 other teams for an extremely wet weekend, competing in a range of events.
The event started positively for the team, passing scrutineering and tilt test with no problems and producing improved results in the static events compared to last year. This included coming 12th in the car cost category and is something the team is hoping to repeat in the German competition from 6-9th August.
Saturday morning saw the team starting the engine for the first time at the competition in preparation for the noise test - unfortunately an unexpected backfire from the engine caused a catastrophic (and noisy!) failure of the intake manifold and put the team out of events for that day. The team's ingenuity and drive showed through however, as a new manifold was fabricated from scratch in just a matter of hours and allowed the team to pass noise and brake test early Sunday morning.
Entry into the endurance event (a 25km race with driver change at halfway) was then secured, and the team was overjoyed that the mechanical and electrical systems of the car were reliable and performing well, despite minimal testing time. After 15km, the car was pulled over suffering from a small oil leak - a consequence of a rushed oil change that morning. Despite not finishing in the endurance event the team was buoyed by the car's reliability and performance.
The past two weeks have been spent fabricating a new and improved intake manifold (from concept to the car in just 5 days), along with a host of other small jobs to ensure that the car performs well at the next competition. This work was validated last weekend, with some time on a rolling road dynamometer on Saturday and a dynamic test on Sunday. The team then left for Germany on Monday afternoon, to arrive in good time for the competition start on Thursday 6th August.
