Research interests

Tom is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, funded by the Leverhulme and Isaac Newton Trusts, and hosted by Professor Hannah Joyce in the Electrical Engineering Division. His current research focuses on the modelling and development of nano- and meta-material systems for spectral sensing and imaging applications, as well as studying quantum phenomena in semiconductor nanowire devices. During his PhD, supervised by Professor Tawfique Hasan, he co-invented the world's smallest spectrometer, showcasing high-fidelity spectral sensing from an individual nanowire. Other, previous research projects include helping to develop solution-phase deposition for nanomaterial optoelectronics and photonics, automated device fabrication frameworks and the study of electronic properties of graphene. He was awarded his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2019; prior to this he took an MRes in Graphene Technology, and an undergraduate masters in Physics. His PhD research saw him shortlisted in the final 5 candidates for the Scopus Early Career Research of the Year 2020 for the Physical Sciences. He is also CTO of ProSpectral, a start-up developing next-generation spectral imaging devices for industrial applications.
