Caroline Willich studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich and the Escuela Technica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales in Madrid. Her studies were focused on sustainable energy systems and turbomachinery. She then wrote her doctoral thesis on local characterisation of solid oxide fuel cells at the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Stuttgart. After completing the thesis she worked as project leader of the fuel cell/gas turbine hybrid power plant project at DLR for several years.

Since June 2014 she is working on pumped thermal energy storage at the engineering department in Cambridge.
