Research interests

Fei's original interest was in grammar and she completed a PhD in contrastive rhetoric, comparing discourse grammar in Chinese and English expository writings.

More recently, Fei’s interest in psychology led her to focus on the learning process and the learners as well as the language. She is currently designing a dual-purpose curriculum where developing the ability to work with differences is incorporated into the language learning process.

Fei is also interested in the role of experiential learning, reflexivity and subjectivity in developing Cross Cultural Competence.

Teaching activity

Fei teaches Mandarin Chinese at CLIC, Engineering Department, Cambridge University.

Over the past four years, Fei has been trialing the concepts behind a dual-purpose curriculum.  The curriculum is rooted in language acquisition and cross-cultural studies while incorporating theories and practice from philosophy and counselling psychology.  It attempts to turn abstract ideas into felt experience in order to facilitate behavioural change.

The curriculum aims to fulfil two purposes.  One is to continue improving language proficiency and cultural knowledge; the other is to introduce the concepts of reflexivity and subjectivity during the language learning process.  The aim is to enable learners to develop an awareness of themselves and others hence building the capability to work with differences.
