Biography

Giacomo got both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Florence (Italy). His Master’s research focused on developing and testing predictive tools for the seismic assessment of historic masonry structures. In this context, he investigated the nonlinear structural behaviour of the Baptistery of Florence (Italy) and the Cugnanesi Tower in San Gimignano (Italy), valuable masonry heritage buildings.

During his Master’s degree, he attended the CEGE department of University College London as a visiting researcher.

In October 2014 Giacomo joined the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering of the University of Manchester for a PhD on the thermo-hygro-mechanical behaviour of concrete simultaneously subjected to mechanical loads and transient high temperatures. In particular, he worked on the theoretical formulation, finite element implementation and validation of a new concrete behaviour law for transient thermal conditions.

During the second and third year of his PhD, he also worked as a lecturer at the University of Manchester, where he led the “Building Information Modelling (BIM)” course for the first year students in Civil Engineering.

Giacomo joined the University of Cambridge in November 2017. He currently holds a position as Research Assistant in the Concrete & Composite Structures Group within the Civil Engineering Division of the Department of Engineering. His research focuses on the enhancement of the innate characteristics of reinforced concrete with a concurrent reduction in total cement content in order to address engineering sustainability priorities. The project is funded by the EPSRC in collaboration with International Industrial and Academic Partners.

Giacomo is an affiliated post-doctoral member of Downing College.
