Deputy Head of Department (Operations and Strategy)
Telephone: +44 1223 3 32671
Philip is the Director of Research and Finance in the Department and also the Deputy Head of Department for Strategy and Operations. He guides and supports the development and expression of research strategies, gathers intelligence on funding opportunities, and through his Research and Finance Office teams provides a professional service to support academics in winning and managing grants.
He also helps companies and institutions to build relationships with the Department. This includes helping them with navigation around the Department, introductions to academics, and the negotiation of agreements (working closely alongside colleagues in the Research Operations Office). The research pages provide a starting point for finding websites for academics, divisions, groups and themes.
Philip is responsible for philanthropic fundraising and marketing through the Department's online news stories, newsletter, social media, and and press releases (through the University's Office of Communications).
Another important aspect of Philip's role is looking after the 260 postdoctoral researchers in the Department. This includes personnel management, training and career development.
As the Enterprise Champion for the Department, Philip offers initial advice and guidance to staff and students with concerning protection of intellectual property, commercialisation of ideas and consulting work. He liaises closely with Cambridge Enterprise in this role.
While Philip is neither an academic nor researcher, he uses his prior consulting experience to: lead workshops on Scenario Planning for two Masters programmes (Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment and the Engineering for Sustainable Development); design and facilitate business and research strategy sessions with academics and industrialists, and, for a few days each year, engages in some freelance business consulting in his spare time.
Manufacturing, design and materials
A significant part of my work involves building and maintaining strong research relationships with business partners ranging from major corporates to start-ups. I lead the Department's work on knowledge transfer and I am an Enterprise Champion. I regularly give talks and one-to-one coaching to help academics, researchers, students and administrators.
Special Advisor to the Centre for Science and Policy at Cambridge.

Philip graduated in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (Jesus College). His career started in industrial R&D in the materials and aerospace sectors. He then progressed to R&D programme management in industrial energy efficiency and renewable energy. This led to him joining PA Consulting to work on technology strategy consulting and then Analysys where he became a Principal Consultant in the telecoms/media sector. In August 2003, Philip became the Department of Engineering's new Director of Research. A full CV is available at LinkedIn (url provided under personal website).
