To read Engineering at Cambridge you first need to be accepted by a College. Full details of the procedure are given in the Cambridge Admissions Prospectus which can be obtained either through your school or directly from the Cambridge Intercollegiate Applications Office.
You must apply well in advance; most students apply at the end of their first year in the sixth form. If you wish to take a year out between school and university (in industry for example) you can still apply at the end of your first year in the sixth form and ask for deferred entry, although in this case you may also apply after taking your A-levels. Applications must be made by mid-October. All decisions on applications to Cambridge are made by the end of the following January.
In considering applicants, colleges look for evidence both of academic ability and of motivation towards Engineering. There are no absolute standards required of A-level achievement but it should be noted that many entrants to the Department have three A grades. The relevant A-level subjects for entry to the Engineering course are Mathematics and Physics. College Admissions Tutors should be consulted if candidates wish to offer other A-level subjects. College Admissions Tutors will also advise potential candidates preparing for other qualifications such as Scottish Highers, the Scottish Certificate of Sixth Year Studies, or the International or European Baccalaureate.
The Department has a booklet on Mathematics, Mechanics and Electrical Engineering that is a guide to the material assumed by lecturers to have been covered in school courses. College Directors of Studies send out these booklets together with reading lists well before the new academic year to help their new students prepare for the course.
