After Graduation
Currently, over 300 students graduate from the Department annually. The Majority of these students take up employment in the UK, with about 60% choosing to work for private industry and 15% entering the public sector. About 5% move to other professions such as teaching or accountancy, and a further 15% stay on or move to other Universities to take higher degrees. Most engineering students begin actively looking for jobs about Christmas-time in their final year. The University Careers Service (Stuart House, Mill Lane) gives guidance through individual interviews and provides information through the Information Room, briefing sessions and vacancy lists. A wide range of opportunities exists in the Department for research leading to the Ph.D and M.Sc. degrees.
For those considering manufacturing industry (but who have not taken the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos) the Department runs the Advanced Course in Design, Manufacture and Management. This one-year post-graduate course gives a wide experience of industry through lectures, visits and industrial projects and it concludes with an optional European tour. Course fees and maintenance grants are available through Science and Engineering Research Council support.
