Electrical and Information Sciences Tripos (EIST)

A first-year Exposition Class debate

The Electrical and Information Sciences Tripos provides specialist training over a range of electrical and information topics. Students take the course in their third and fourth years, most with the advantage of the breadth of knowledge given by part I Engineering. It is also possible to take the two-year Electrical and Information Sciences Tripos after studying Natural Scineces or Mathematics for two years.

Students who wish to specialize in Electrical and Information Engineering take four of the following six papers in their third year (EIST Part I):

Students may choose their fifth paper either from the list above or from any of the papers available in Part IIA Engineering. coursework during the first two terms involves laboratory experiments, whtile the third term of the third year is devoted entirely to project work.

EIST Part II has a modular structure like Part IIB of the engineering Tripos. Each student takes 8 modules with at least 6 chosen from about 24 in the electrical and information area. Students undertake a major project throughout their fourth year. As for Part IIB Engineering a limited number of students may be able to study for a term at a University in another European country.
