Experience in Industry

Many students plan to take a break of a year between school and university. This can be a most valuable time if used positively, for example in industry or in travel. Some industrial employers arrange for their students to keep academically fit through da y-release courses, but those who have been away from academic work for some months rapidly re-adjust under the pressure of their Cambridge commitments.

Industrial Sponsorship is common among students, and schools can usually advise on application procedures. The advantages of this include industrial and social experience which gives some context in which to place academic studies, opportunities for vacat ion employment during the university course, and often financial benefits as well.

It is a current requirement for Part IB of the Tripos that candidates have completed 4 weeks of training in manufacturing processes. For Part II Engineering, the Electrical and Information Engineering Tripos and the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos, a fur ther four weeks of experience with the workforce in production or manufacture, or on a civil engineering site is required. These industrial qualifications can be completed during the pre-university period.

Advice about possible industrial employment before coming to Cambridge may be obtained from the Industrial Placement Coordinator at the Engineering Department or through the Director of Studies in Engineering of your College, once you have been offered a place.
