Turbomachinery Group

Research in the Turbomachinery Group focuses on improving the aero-thermal performance of turbomachines. These machines are the principle technology for the world's energy conversion processes and improving their efficiency has a clear link to reducing environmental impact. Projects currently being undertaken include those related to jet engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, turbochargers and tidal power turbines.

The Turbomachinery Group is based at the Whittle Laboratory on the West Cambridge Site. Researchers at the Laboratory have an extensive track record of successful collaboration with industry (particularly with Rolls-Royce but also with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Dyson, Siemens and others) and with other word-leading research organisations. Work is divided, approximately equally, between computational simulation of the flow and experimental measurements taken in a wide variety of facilities. In 2012, the Whittle Laboratory was extended with a new laboratory building, seminar rooms and offices.

New projects are always being developed and applications from high quality graduate students and post-doctoral researchers are welcome at any time. Prospective PhD students are encouraged to apply to the new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Gas Turbine Aerodynamics, an exciting joint-venture between the universities of Cambridge, Oxford and Loughborough with extensive support from several industry partners.

Those interested in joining the Group are encouraged to email the Whittle Laboratory Administrator or contact members of staff in charge of projects

Prospective research students are encouraged to email the Whittle Laboratory Administrator or contact members of staff in charge of projects in which they are especially interested. We are not accepting applications for internships at present.
