The aim of the Research Office is to provide a professional service to help the academic community in the Department
to secure funding and initiate projects in order to further its research interests. The Office is managed by Philip Guildford, Director of Research. The Research Office team supports the Head of Department with strategy and three main areas of work:
Research Grants: assisting academics with grant applications, grant management and commercialisation
Research Staff & Visitors: overseeing the administration of: contract research staff recruitment and personnel; academic visits
Marketing: managing fundraising and marketing.
Research in the Department received the top 5* rating in the Research Assessment Exercises (RAEs) 1996 and 2001.
The RAE is conducted nationally to assess the quality of research in universities and colleges in the UK.
The Department came top of the rankings for General Engineering in the lastest RAE in 2008. 90% of our research submission was judged to be either internationally excellent or world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour. 45% of our submission achieved the world-leading status; this far exceeds the result for any other submission in General Engineering and is not surpassed by any institution in any other engineering or scientific discipline.
