ENGINEERING TRIPOS PART IIA -2012/2013
Leader: Dr T.D. Wilkinson email: tdw13
Project Type: Group
Project Category: Design
Prerequisites: 3B1 & 3B2 essential
Timing: Thursday 9-11, and afternoons and Monday 11-1
SUMMARY
This project will involve the design and implementation of the electronic circuitry to run an optical communication system. Various elements of system design and circuit design will be required, taking into account the availability of components and time. After construction of a core transmitter and receiver system, various options for extending the capability of the link will be on offer.
The project will be run in groups of 3 students with some elements of the design being the individual responsibility and others as part of a group. Each group will be split into the transmitter, receiver and link application design elements, with the group being responsible for the testing and characterisation of the link at various stages of the project. All group members will be required to both design, build and test their individual elements before combining them to make the overall communications link.
AIMS
FORMAT
Students work in groups to construct the system, but will be expected to manage the different stages of the design and construction appropriately. All reports are done individually, although drawings may be shared between groups.
ACTIVITIES
Week 1: System outline and basic driver/encoder. First interim report.
Week 2: Receiver design and proposal for optional extension. Second interim report.
Week 3: System test circuitry and general testing. Optional design/construction.
Week 4: Final testing and finale: link up of individual systems. Final report.
MINI-LECTURES
Mini-lectures on optical communication system design and circuit design for the basic building blocks will be integrated into the first two weeks of the project.
ASSESSMENT
Format: Submission Date - Marks
Interim report 1: Thursday 16 May 2013 - 15 marks
Interim report 2: Thursday 23 May 2013 - 15 marks
Final report: 4pm Thursday 6 June 2013 - 50 marks
Approximately 30% of marks are based on group work and 70% on individual elements.
