AIMS

Almost half of the UK’s carbon is associated with buildings. This course aims to create a new generation of architectural engineers who can respond imaginatively to the challenge that this presents.

This module is different in structure to most other modules. For example, it is run in conjunction with the Architecture Department. The final year students of CUED and Architecture will work together one afternoon per week on an architectural engineering design exercise. The course will focus on environmental architecture, and on how to provide energy-efficient building designs, with the final part of the course looking at the integration of architectural concept, energy demand, structure and buliding performance

The teaching format will be unconventional. Each afternoon will probably begin and end with a short talk by one of the lecturers or by an external speaker. Between these, students will work (in groups) on developing thermal, structural and other strategies for their design project

Work done in class will typically need to be submitted at the start of the following session. The final afternoon of the course will be an evaluation of the design projects. There will also be othere short coursework tasks, both of a technical and non-technical nature, throughout the term.

LECTURE SYLLABUS

COURSEWORK
