Module 4D7 - Concrete and Masonry Structures

Leader: Dr. C. Middleton (crm11@eng)

Timing:

Lent Term

Prerequisites:

3D3

Structure:

14 lectures + 2 examples classes + coursework

Assessment: Material / Format / Timing / Marks
Lecture Syllabus / Written exam (1.5 hours) / Start of Easter Term / 75 %
Coursework / Test Report + Design Exercise / Michaelmas Term / 25 %

AIMS

This module aims to carry further the basic material on reinforced concrete studied in Part IIA, to treat such matters as durability and corrosion, design of beams, slab, columns and frameworks (for shear and torsion as well as bending), covering masonry structures where appropriate, but leaving prestressed concrete to module 4D8.

LECTURE SYLLABUS

(Lecturer: Dr C.T. Morley)

Background to cement and concrete (1L)

Limit state design (1L)

Material properties (2L)

Durability (2L)

(Lecturer: Dr C. Middleton)

Reinforced concrete structures (6L)

Masonry structures (2L)

COURSEWORK

This will consist of two parts (i) witnessing experimental laboratory techniques in the context of reinforced concrete testing, plus short write-up, and (ii) a short design exercise.

OBJECTIVES
