ENGINEERING TRIPOS PART IIB – 2012/2013

Module 4M2 - German

Prerequisites:

German at Intermediate Level

Structure:

Course given at Intermediate and Advanced Levels;
7 lectures + 7 seminars + coursework

Assessment: Material / Format (Marks) / Timing
Coursework / 3 Tasks 2 written reports (30% each), one oral presentation (40%) / Spaced throughout Lent Term

AIMS

To advance the understanding of German industry, society and culture through the study of engineering related topics and issues. To enable all students to consolidate their engineering-related language skills and improve particular weaknesses.

Particular emphasis will be put on:

LECTURE SYLLABUS

(7 Lectures, various speakers + 7 seminars, MK)

  1. Economy and Industry in Germany . An outlook on the political and economical aspects in Germany
  2. Germany and the Europen Union
  3. The German education system with special reference to engineering schools/institutions
  4. Intercultural Communication?Cultural Differences
  5. -7 Engineering/Research-Presentations in German (3 Lectures)

Seminars

Associated with each lecture will be a one-hour seminar. This may be held before the lecture for preparation, or following the lecture for discussion purposes. The seminars will cover:

  • Support will be given with the following language related competences if necessary:
  • COURSEWORK

    The student will prepare 3 major pieces of coursework.

    Assessment

    The assignments will be marked for both language and content (50% language, 50% content)
