ENGINEERING TRIPOS PART IIB – 2012/2013

Module 4M4 - Japanese

AIMS

Through the study of engineering related topics and issues, to advance understanding in Japanese technology, society and culture. To enable all students to consolidate their best skills and develop their weaker ones further while particular emphasis will be put on writing skills.

LECTURE SYLLABUS (7 lectures)

• The History of Japanese Engineering
• Popular Culture, High technology and Japanese Economy
• Environment and New Energy
• Transport and Civil Engineering
• The Majour Japanese Industries (Automobiles, Robots etc.)
• Japanese Architecture and Structuring Engineering
• Communications: the New Technologies

Seminars

Associated with each lecture will be a one-hour seminar. This may be held before the lecture for preparation, or following the lecture for discussion purposes.

COURSEWORK

The student will prepare 3 major pieces of coursework.

• Two written summaries of the lectures (30% each)
• One oral presentation (40%)

The coursework will be marked for both language and content (50% language, 50% content).

OBJECTIVES

On completion of the module students should:

• Be confident in speaking/reading/writing whether in a general or work-related situation;
• Be able to use the language as a tool to improve understanding of technology, society and culture;
• Be able to analyse a topic/an issue in depth, compare all the elements at play, synthesise the major points and make a balanced judgement.
