Requirements & Time Periods
The Department of Engineering insists that all engineering undergraduates complete a period of eight weeks in total of industrial experience before BA graduation at the end of the third year of the tripos. A minimum four weeks of the CUED industrial experience requirement must be completed before the end of the summer vacation immediately following the first year of undergraduate studies in order to graduate successfully with Honours from Part 1B Engineering Tripos taken at the end of Year 2.
If students stay on to read the Engineering Part 2A Tripos or Manufacturing Engineering Part 1 Tripos, taken at the end of the third year of the engineering course, a further four weeks is required to enable the student to graduate successfully with Honours. However, this four weeks can be completed at any stage prior to the deadline and the majority of students complete the eight weeks necessary to graduate successfully from the course during the long vacation at the end of the first year and before the beginning of the second year of the course.
The regulations are slightly different for migrants from other Cambridge University Tripos who transfer at the end of the Part 1B tripos taken at the end of the second year, but prior to the third year of the CUED Engineering course. CUED will also credit any relevant industrial experience undertaken prior to arrival at the University. Furthermore, students are encouraged and assisted to complete more than the minimum requirements to increase and improve their knowledge and skills of their subject area prior to graduation.
