Cambridge Region - "Silicon Fen"

Cambridge has become one of the world's leading centres for Hi-Tech companies thanks to the close ties with the University. Known locally as "Silicon Fen", there is a profusion of "Start-up" companies, two of whom ( ARM & Autonomy ) have grown large enough to merit inclusion at some point in the FTSE 100 and many others have publicly floated or have been bought out by larger concerns. Additionally many leading International companies have premises here to tap the Networking potential of the flow of talent and ideas emanating from the University.

There is a strong focus for engineers in the Communications, Software, Hardware, Electronics, Instrumentation, Semiconductor and Microelectronics.

  • Connected Cambridge : Connected Cambridge has a news section and features regarding local companies in the Cambridge area It also has a jobs on offer section so you can keep up to date with which companies are currently recruiting staff and therefore in a positive situation.
  • To the north of Cambridge, Ely has a very fast rail link , and a number of companies in the Industrial Park around the town. To the west Huntingdon has some large companies and is accessible by the new Guided Bus route. Similarly Royston and Melbourn Science Park to the south of Cambridge have fast rail links.
