United States of America

The USA is a popular destination for students and there are some "internship" organisations with programmes to cater for this. The most widely known is BUNAC with its Camp America programme where you have the pleasure of looking after US High School kids over the summer then a chance to travel. In addition they the lesser known Work America programme which has two options. You can find your own job and BUNAC provide the admin, visas etc. or they have a list of jobs, mostly retail, restaurant or seasonal work.

Alternatively, there is a series of programmes funded by the USA Government funded Council for International Exchanges (CIEE)who organise programmes aimed specifically at students.

Quick Links are available for BUNAC and CIEE.

Both of the above schemes require quite large fees. This covers the protracted process of following the procedures and completing the paperwork required to get the J1 visa which permits students to work temporarily in the USA. This means that you will have to start your Jobsearch early in the academic year leaving sufficient time for your documentation to be processed once you have successfully clinched a placement.

It is not advisable to attempt to enter the US without the appropriate paperwork as there is the possibility of deportation and restrictions on future entry to the USA.

The Careers Service holds a number of placements Overseas in a range of different job categories and geographic areas.
