Health and Safety
The University takes Health and Safety seriously and therefore we take certain measures to ensure that we exercise our "Duty of Care" over you when you are on Work Experience. This applies particularly to those who are obliged to undertake a period of work experience to meet the course requirements.
CUED take the following steps to try and reduce the possibility of your Health and Safety being put at risk:
- On arrival all students are given a briefing by the Health and Safety Officer regarding the potential hazards and dangers within the Department. Emphasis is given during the talk that these hazards and dangers exist outside the Department whilst on Work Experience. Students in Year Two will be given a refresher.
- All students who are obliged to undertake Industrial Experience to meet the requirements will be issued with a logbook, which contains information on Health and Safety, a checklist and a letter for your prospective employer outlining our responsibilities. Copies of the logbook can be downloaded from the web.
- The Department employs a full time Health and Safety Officer, Ian Slack, who can advise on any matters relating to Health and Safety. If you wish to contact him he is in Room BNO-41/BNO-42 or you can e-mail him, should you need any specific help or advice.
- The University also provides Insurance in the form of Public Liability

3.0 Public Liability
3.1 This insurance has three functions, namely: - (a) to indemnify the University against legal liability for damages and costs in respect of accidental injury to any person other than an employee (see paragraph 2.2 above) or damage or loss to third party property;
- (b) to cover the defence of individuals acting on behalf of the University should they be subject to an action brought by a third party alleging such liability;
- (c) Not relevant to Industrial Experience.
- In the U.K. any organisation over 5 people in number is legally required to register with the Health & Safety Executive and they are subject to the possibility of Inspection. Employers and Public Liability Insurance is compulsory and the certificates must be publicly displayed. Copies of CUED's Policies are in the Inglis corridor leading to the Workshops. If you are in any doubt as to whether the company has insurance or not, ask to see the certificates.
- Students working abroad are subject to the Health and Safety policies of each different country and will vary accordingly. You are strongly advised to take out travel insurance, and if you are in any doubt about your personal insurance, you are advised to take out this as well. The organisation should outline its liabilities to you in a contract or on your arrival. The University's policy will cover you for Third Party Liability only, and not any injury to you.
The University's Public Liability policy will extend to provide cover where the University's business is being carried out away from its usual premises.
