Current Project:

Shock Dynamics of Oilwell Drilling Tools, in collaboration with the Schlumberger Research Center

Bottom hole drilling tools may be subjected to severe impacts during operation that can lead to failure. The aim of my work is to understand the shock dynamics and other factors that can cause damage to the tool. In particular internal shocks and friction between the tools component are investigated. The techniques utilised to study the physics of the problem include method in both the frequency and time domain, including the Dynamic Stiffness Method applied to shells, a novel Asymptotic Approach, the Statistical Energy Analysis and the FEM/SEA hybrid method. Outcome of this research have potential application to other engineering field where impact and/or friction between structural components are involved
