                  Turbine stator-well cavity flow

 

Dr Nick Atkins

I joined the Whittle Laboratory as MHI University Lecturer in Turbomachinery at the beginning of 2010.

Previously I was a University Lecturer in Thermofluids and (acting) Director of the Rolls-Royce University Technical Centre in Aerothermal Systems at the University of Sussex Thermo-Fluid Mechanics Research Centre .

Before Sussex I held the WW Spooner Junior Research Fellowship at the Osney Laboratory (Southwell), at the University of Oxford where I also completed my doctoral studies and read Engineering Science.

Research Interests

I am currently involved various turbomachinery research projects, further details can be found by following the links below. Much of my current research is concerned with the flow and heat transfer within the internal or secondary air systems of both aero propulsion and energy based gas turbines (such as the cavity flow shown on the left).

Teaching

I currently demonstrate the Heat Transfer and Catalytic Combustion laboratories.

Whilst at Sussex I lectured on Design Techniques and Design Integration. I have lectured on Heat Transfer, Turbomachinery and Termperature Measurement as part of the TFMRC CPD lecture series in association with the IMechE South Eastern.
