Strategic Aim: Advancing the mechanics of civil and structural engineering systems within the broader context of the design, construction and operation of sustainable infrastructure and the stewardship of Earth's resources and environment.
The Civil Engineering (D) Division is led by Professor Simon Guest. The research topics explored within the Division aim to address issues, offer solutions and advance technology within the civil engineering sector. The Research Groups within the Division are Laing O' Rourke (LOR), Geotechnical, Use Less, Structures, Sustainable Developement, FIBE/CDT, CSIC and NFRIS.
The Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology focus on what the future of construction might look like and how new technologies could be used to create innovative processes. The principles of soil mechanics are the basis for the research of the Geotechnical and Environmental Group, topics range from the clean-up of contaminated land to the design of underground spaces. The Structures Group research varies in scale from examining the structure of a DNA molecule to designing a deployable structure for use in outer space. The Sustainable Development Group tackle the growing concern amongst engineers to ensure that their projects are sustainable within the context of today's society.
