Research interests

Dr McShane's research interests include:

  • Mechanics of materials
  • Light-weight materials: sandwich structures, lattice materials, polymers, composites, aerogels
  • Dynamic behaviour of materials: blast and impact resistance, deformation and failure
  • Multi-scale modelling of materials
  • Material processing: additive manufacturing, friction processing

Research projects

  • Polymer nanocomposites for lightweight armour applications
  • Impact perforation of polymer-metal laminates
  • Impact response of cellular materials manufactured using Selective Laser Melting
  • Stacked folded cores for blast resistant sandwich structures
  • Grain boundary interface mechanics in strain gradient crystal plasticity
  • Aerogels: processing, modelling and application
