Best Civil Engineering Student, 2001

Rachel Battilana who graduated from the Department this year, has won The Institution of Civil Engineers' Award for the 'Best Civil Engineering Student' in the national 2001 Science Engineering and Technology Student of the Year Awards.

The Awards were presented at a magnificent gala dinner before an audience comprising hundreds of technology students, academics, senior industry executives; as well as senior figures from government, scientific and technical institutions and the media.

Rachel's project on the 'Design of a Cold Climate Emergency Shelter for Refugees' which she worked on in conjunction with members of the School of Architecture, was praised for demonstrating the compassionate face of civil engineering today. Rachel is soon to start work at the civil engineering firm, Buro Happold, where she will be able to continue working on this project.

The award includes £1000 prize money for the University, as well as £500 and a trophy for the student. Many congratulations to Rachel for her achievement.
