Engineering Connections: Improving the Design Process

British Design Process

The Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge is opening its doors on 30 March 2007 to showcase its research to local businesses, researchers, and entrepreneurs.

This is the second of the Engineering Connections series. On this occasion, the Engineering Design Centre (EDC) will reveal the latest results from its research on "Improving the Design Process".

The Centre unites a wide range of disciplines to engage in innovative and applied research with strong support from the EPSRC and industrial partners. Together, they have shown through a string of successes that it makes good business sense to invest as much effort into how products are designed as into what products are designed. For instance, the Centre has led the way on:

The main Engineering Connections event starts at 1600. The senior academics will give a series of short presentations about the Centre's research at 1630 for no more than one hour before the visitors get the chance to meet the staff and students in an exhibition area filled with posters and demonstrations. This is a unique opportunity to get a real feeling for the work and discuss the latest developments in an informal setting. The event is scheduled to end at 1900.

Earlier in the day, the research students will give detailed presentations on their work. This is primarily an opportunity for them to practice their presentation skills, but visitors are very welcome to book a place and sit in on the sessions, which promise to give a fascinating view of exciting new research projects taking shape.
