For many of the world's poorest citizens, access to safe water supply and adequate sanitation remains a dream unfulfilled. At least 1.2 billion people lack access to safe water supply, and 2.4 billion lack access to basic sanitation.

At the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000, 189 heads of state adopted the Millennium Development Goals, which set clear, time-bound targets for making progress in addressing the most pressing issues facing developing countries. Yet achieving Target 10 - halving the proportion of the world's population without access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation by the year 2015 - requires reaching some 275,000 people with clean water supply, and 545,000 with sanitation services, every single day for the next twelve years. Can it be done?

Professor Jennifer Davis from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA ,a member
of the United Nations Task Force on Water and Sanitation, will be addressing this topic in an evening lecture entitled:

"Achieving the Millennium Development Goals for Water and Sanitation: What will it take?"

on Thursday, 29th January, 8pm at the University Centre.

The Lecture is being organised by the Department of Engineering's Centre for Sustainable Development.

All are welcome.
