GW Gray Medal

Professor Bill Crossland of the Photonics and Sensors group has been awarded the prestigious G W Gray Medal from the British Liquid Crystal Society (BLCS) for his outstanding and long term contributions to research in the field of liquid crystals technology, displays and spatial light modulators.

This includes his pioneering work on displays and liquid crystal over silicon technology (now known as the microdisplay industry) in both the 70s and 80s and his work since then at Cambridge University Engineering Department. This recent work includes developing new applications and device structures such as the photo-luminescent LCD, high speed modulators, holographic switching, packet switching, novel photoconductors, displays, telecommunications devices and non-display applications.

The medal was presented at the BLCS annual dinner in Manchester by Professor John Goodby. The G W Gray Medal of the British Liquid Crystal Society was created in recognition of the award of the Kyoto Medal to Prof George Gray CBE, FRS.
