Michell Instruments collaborates with the University of Cambridge on laser research

Ely-based manufacturer, Michell Instruments, is sponsoring a Department of Engineering PhD student to undertake research into new sensing technologies over three years.

We are very enthusiastic about partnering with the University of Cambridge during this period and hope that this will be the start of a long and mutually beneficial collaboration.

PhD student, Sapuma Jaliya Senanayaka, who has recently graduated from the Department of Engineering, will be developing novel techniques in spectroscopy – the use of laser light – as a method of sensing trace moisture.

As well as sponsorship, the company will provide Mr Senanayaka with valuable industrial research training and experience as well as access to world-class equipment and facilities. The ultimate aim of the project for Michell Instruments is to discover new and better ways to meet the needs of their industrial customers around the world.

Michell Instruments has been a global leader in the field of moisture measurement for almost 40 years and, from humble beginnings in Covent Garden, Cambridge, is now a global organisation with subsidiaries and offices in nine countries around the world including China, Japan and the United States. Last year, the company doubled the capacity of its manufacturing facilities in the UK and created 24 jobs in the local area.
