What makes a good lecturer?

What makes a good lecturer?

Congratulations to John O'Brien, in his first year at the Engineering Department who has been awarded the first prize of £150 in the LTSN Engineering Student Awards 2003-2004 for his essay on 'What makes a good engineering lecturer?'.

The competition aims to motivate students to think about how and what they are being taught while allowing LTSN to generate ideas on good practice. Twenty nine high quality applications were received and of these, eleven were shortlisted for publication, including three others from engineering students at Cambridge:

Richard Stevenson in his second year, and Gerard Ridgway and Andrew Von Hirschberg, both in the third year.

The Higher Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre is a centre for all engineering academics in the UK. It provides subject based support to promote quality learning and teaching by stimulating the sharing of good practice and innovation in learning and teaching.

An edited version of John's winning essay was printed in the Times Higher Education Supplement in March.
