Alumna Dr Shaona Ghosh has been honoured with the prestigious Hind Rattan Award 2018 for ‘keeping the Flag of India high abroad’.

The Hind Rattan is one of the highest Indian diasporic awards granted annually to non-resident persons of Indian origin (NRIs) by the NRI Welfare Society of India.

Dr Ghosh, a former postdoc and current research collaborator at the Department, who now works in one of the top engineering companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA, was presented with the award – also known as the ‘Jewel of India’ – in Bangkok, Thailand recently.

The Hind Rattan is one of the highest Indian diasporic awards granted annually to non-resident persons of Indian origin (NRIs) by the NRI Welfare Society of India.

The award was presented to Dr Ghosh by His Excellency Ambassador Philippe Le Gall (High Commission of the Republic of Seychelles) on behalf of NRI Welfare Society.

“It means a lot to be recognised by my home country, when I’m so many miles away from home,” said Dr Ghosh. “But what matters most is how we can leverage our skills and experience that we have picked up abroad by contributing back home, making an impact in a positive way, and representing India on a global stage.

“I would like to thank the NRI Welfare Society for enabling a channel of communication between Indians abroad, and the Government of India for facilitating such changes. Also, I would like to thank the Department of Engineering and my former supervisor Dr Per Ola Kristensson for giving me the opportunity and the freedom to make a positive change.”

Dr Kristensson said: "I'm very happy Shaona has received this well-deserved recognition. She is a brilliant researcher, combining exceptionally strong visioning of future designs with the technical excellence required to realise them."
