A Department lecturer has been elected a Fellow of both the IEEE and the OSA in recognition of his research in the field of optical fibre communication.

To become a Fellow of the IEEE and OSA is a great honour and I was delighted to officially receive the Fellowships at this year's OFC from the three technical co-sponsors of the conference.

Dr Seb Savory

Dr Seb Savory, Lecturer in Photonics and RF Systems, has been elected a Fellow of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and The Optical Society (OSA), for his contributions to digital coherent transceivers for optical fibre communication – a technology that now underpins modern optical communication networks.

Dr Savory has also taken up the most senior leadership role within the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC) as Chair of the Steering Committee.

OFC is the largest global conference and exhibition for optical communications and networking professionals and among the 14,500 attendees, it attracts the biggest names in the field from all over the world. Dr Savory becomes the first Chair of the Steering Committee in the 40 year history of the conference who will come from outside of North America, where the three technical co-sponsors; IEEE ComSoc, IEEE Photonics Society and the OSA are based. He has been involved in the conference organisation for several years, including serving as a Program Chair and a General Chair for the conference in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

Dr Savory said: “To become a Fellow of the IEEE and OSA is a great honour and I was delighted to officially receive the Fellowships at this year's OFC from the three technical co-sponsors of the conference. I'm also pleased to be able to continue to serve the OFC community by chairing the Steering Committee."
