Turning food waste into animal feed: research student takes prize

A PhD student from the Geotechnical and Environmental Research Group has received a prestigious Chartered Institution of Waste Management Award.

Ramy Salemdeeb, a third-year PhD student, has been announced as the winner of the James Sumner Award, which recognises the achievements of professionals and academics working in the field of waste and resource management. The award was presented at the Resourcing the Future conference in London.

Ramy’s PhD research focuses on quantifying the environmental impact of food waste management options using a hybrid life cycle assessment approach. In addition to looking at conventional downstream food waste management technologies, such as in-vessel composting, anaerobic digestion and incineration, his research investigates the potential benefits associated with the introduction of a food-waste-to-animal-feed technology. It also explores the potential environmental benefits associated with food waste prevention. His work is highlighted in the paper, Environmental and health impacts of using food waste as animal feed: a comparative analysis of food waste management options, published in Journal of Cleaner Production this year. Ramy graduated with a first class in civil engineering followed by a Masters in Environmental Management and Technology from Oxford Brookes University.

The award, which consists of a bursary of up to £1,000, will support Ramy to attend the International Solid Waste Association World Congress in Serbia from 19–21 September 2016.
