A team of young researchers based in the Electrical Engineering division, Dr Peng Li, Dr Flora Li, James She, Alvaro Figueredo, Dr Xiaoshi Wang and Dr Philip Paul, has been awarded first prize (£2000) for the annual UK-China Entrepreneurship Competition, for a business plan on the commercial exploitation of a new biosensor technology. The approach, named GENE@CHIP and based on the proprietary technique developed by the Polysilicon TFT Group, can provide fast, low cost portable systems for detection of infectious diseases.
The competition, co-sponsored by the China-Britain Business Council, the UK China Innovation and Development Association and the Science and Technology Department of the Chinese Embassy, is meant to encourage and facilitate young entrepreneurship in the Sino-UK British innovative business sector. The winning project was selected from over 200 participants and the award was presented to the team by the Chair of the Judging Panel, Professor David Brown of Lancaster University, during the UK-China Entrepreneurship and Business Forum, held at UCL in London on May 19. The business plan was illustrated at the Forum by the team leader, Dr Peng Li.
