|Dr Janet Lees, Lecturer in Structural Engineering, has been awarded a Brian Mercer Postdoctoral
Awardfor Innovation from the Royal Society. These awards aim to promote innovation and commercial exploitation
in the areas of novel materials and processes of direct interest to the built environment.
Janet's work is in the area of using fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) to strengthen and repair existing
concrete structures such as bridges over highways. These novel materials are strong and light-weight and have
a durability which far exceeds that of steel and avoids the problems and costs associated with corrosion in
conventional steel re-inforced concrete.
Work on the project will involve fatigue testing to ensure that the FRP systems will have a long service
life. More details of Janet's work in this area can be found on the CUED environmental research pages.
