Dr Steve Morris receives the British Liquid Crystal Society Young Scientist of the Year award

Team at CMMPE

Dr Steve Morris has received the British Liquid Crystal Society Young Scientist of the Year award at this year's AGM where he gave an invited lecture on 'Liquid crystal lasers and tuneable photonic bandgaps'.

Steve is a researcher in the Centre of Molecular Materials for Photonics and Electronics (CMMPE) at the Department. He undertakes research and manages research with the liquid crystal materials and devices area. His work has lead to several world class publications on flexoelectric and lasing liquid crystals for novel applications in the Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Physics D and recent invited papers for The Journal for the Society of Information Display. This work demonstrates how successfully Steve has bridged the gap between materials physics, characterisation and device engineering / applications.

During both his PhD and postdoctoral studies at CMMPE Steve has performed at the highest level often complex and frustrating experimental work within the laboratory. He has a formidable array of experimental skills, including device design and characterisation.

Since completing his PhD Steve has been employed by the EPSRC basic technology grant, COSMOS and has taken on the role of research co-ordinator for the project. This includes fostering collaboration between Engineering, Physics and Chemistry, in which he has done an excellent job with collaborative publications as evidence of its success. Steve has also embraced the teaching role and was awarded a Fellowship at St Catherine's College, where he is now Director of Studies for Physics.

His ability to create and direct his own independent research ideas has been proven through recent publications with student J Chen, and the CMMPE students F. Castles and S. Choi. Both excellent results and published in Applied Physics Letters. Most recently Steve was instrumental in writing and co-ordinating the COSMOS TT grant which has been accepted for funding by the EPSRC.
